What are hashtags?

Hashtags, originally known as the pound key on the telephone before social media, are simple keyword phrases preceded by the infamous (#). A hashtag looks like #this. There is the ‘#’ symbol followed by a #word or #multiplewords put together. You shouldn’t use spaces or punctuation in your hashtags or else they will not work. quite useful even though they are sometimes small.

In a sense, hashtags are like loudspeakers for your content and take your social media marketing game to the next level.

What do hashtags do?

Hashtags can be used in a variety of different ways. You can create, sort, and build conversations with people about your brand or other similar topics by using hashtags. By keeping track of trends, creating one hashtag across all your social platforms, and using hashtags for research, you can develop your business’ presence online.

Another way you can develop your presence is by watching what other people say or do using hashtags that relate to your business. See what top influencers and consumers say about any category important to your business by looking up the hashtag similar to your brand. For example, let’s say you own a garden business. By searching #houseplants, you can find a specific audience similar to your niche.

What should I not do with hashtags?

While hashtags can connect you to specific audiences, you must make sure you are reaching out to the right audience. If you a local garden business and start using the hashtag #ExpensiveTravelHotel, you will attract an audience that is expecting content related to that tag. You risk both you and the incoming audience confusion and disappointment.

Carefully crafting hashtags is an important part of increasing and strengthening your presence on all media platforms. For more information on how you could be strengthening your social media plan, contact us today.
